Hobbies to Try!-image

Do you find yourself with a large amount of free time that you usually spend on your mobile device? If so, you may want to get yourself a hobby! Hobbies are a good way to use your free time for something productive and fun, and are also a healthy way to channel your passions. In this week’s Canyon Park Apartments Blog, we’ve got a short list of hobbies you can try! Painting Miniatures/Wargaming If you’re the type of person who pays attention to the little details, then this hobby may be for you! There are plenty of games with miniatures that need painting, like Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer 40000, and Guild Ball, so it’s relatively easy to get into this hobby. Miniatures for those games range from 28mm models to larger ones and many require a steady hand and eye for color to paint well. Painting miniatures can get pretty expensive, but it can be rewarding to see the product of your hard work! Knitting Knitting used to be known as something grandmothers did while sitting in their rocking chair, but it’s actually a great hobby! It does take a lot of patience and some adept fingers, but the end result is worth it! From scarves to sweaters, you can knit a variety of gifts for friends or items for yourself.   Cooking Do you fancy yourself a good cook? If you aren’t, it’s always a good idea to learn how to cook. There is a lot of value to picking up the hobby of cooking, as you can make food for yourself, your friends, or even large parties of people! So, rather than spending time mindlessly surfing the internet or watching YouTube videos, you can learn how to make a delicious meal for your significant other or friends!   Do you have any hobbies? Try Something New with Dungeons & Dragons!-image

Dungeons & Dragons has been around since 1974, but has recently experienced a resurgence of epic proportions. From Stranger Things to streamed live-plays on Twitch and other streaming services, D&D has been brought to the mainstream, so it’s normal to wonder what it’s like. In this week’s Canyon Park Apartments Blog, we’ve got a few tidbits of information to give you the lowdown on Dungeons & Dragons and why you should try it! Roleplaying Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game, which means that there’s bound to be an element of assuming the role of your character. This may be a difficult concept for people, and it can be potentially embarrassing, but as long as you’re with the right people, immersing yourself in the roleplay can be fruitful and fun! Remember, if you are going to try D&D, make sure you’re not a jerk when someone attempts to roleplay! It’s all about having fun, so don’t be that person! Storytelling Though roleplaying is a large part of D&D, the storytelling aspect of the game is by far the most important. When explaining the game, the most common explanation of D&D is that it’s collaborative storytelling with a roleplay aspect! Whether you’re the dungeon master or a player, you’re working together with the rest of your friends at the table to tell a compelling story of adventure and fantasy! It’s time to stretch your creative muscles! Friendship What better way to spend some time than by spending it with friends around a table playing make-believe like you used to when you were a kid? Friendships can be strengthened by playing D&D especially when everyone is on the same page, so have fun with it!.  Don’t let the stigma of D&D being nerdy stop you from trying something that could end up being your favorite game of all time! Have you had any experience with Dungeons & Dragons? If you have, share those experiences with our Puyallup, WA apartment community!

Prepare for Warmer Weather-image

The weather is going to be changing soon, bringing about warmer weather and longer days. While it may still be cold for a little longer here in Puyallup, WA, it isn’t too early to get ready for the change in season. In this week’s Canyon Park Apartments Blog, we’ve got a few ways you can prepare and adjust to the change in weather.  Weather Appropriate Clothing Since the weather is cold already, your closet is going to be full of warm clothing that is perfect for the transition toward warmer weather, but once the weather truly gets hot, you’re going to want appropriate clothing! If you’re looking to change up your wardrobe, you can invest in some newer, more up-to-date articles of clothing, but the important thing is that your clothing will keep you cool. Keep in mind that certain fabrics will keep you cooler, so invest in more cotton or linen clothes! Plan Activities How often have you wanted to do something once the weather became better that you ended up not being able to do? Throughout the course of winter, you’ve probably accumulated a list of activities to do, so make a set of detailed plans so you can carry them out when you get the time! Whether it’s hiking, a road trip, or going to a water park, having a plan makes it more likely that you’ll actually follow through! Clean Up Let’s be honest, you’re not going to need all the warm blankets and clothing in the summer, so make some space to put those items. Invest in some boxes or totes to have an efficient way to store any outstanding loose items, because nothing is worse than a closet stocked full of loose clothing. Tips for Cleaning Out Your Car-image

In today’s Canyon Park Blog, we’re here to share some tips with members of our apartment community for cleaning out your car. Enjoy the rest of your month here in Puyallup, WA with a clean and refreshed car! Organize and clean out the trash. One of the most effective ways to clean out your car is to first organize all the items that are inside. Throw away old clutter and garbage, then organize any papers you’d like to keep in your glovebox, as well as items in your trunk. If you have items that you like to keep in the trunk of your car, use plastic containers or cardboard boxes to keep things organized.  Get a microfiber car windshield cleaner. Do you have a good method for cleaning the inside of your windshield? Purchase one of these windshield cleaners to get rid of any film or dust that collects there. Find a good glass cleaner to spray on the windshield then wipe it clean with this easy-to-use tool. Use a small brush for dirt and spills. Armrests, cup holders, and seats can get very dirty. To fight these messes, wipe off all surfaces with a warm, soapy washcloth then use a toothbrush or another type of small brush to scrub up particularly dirty areas. Try out Magic Eraser. Magic Erasers are awesome tools to use when cleaning most things in your apartment or elsewhere. In addition, they do a great job cleaning off surfaces in your car. Use them to get rid of grimy and dirty spots on the dashboard, armrests, handles, and the inside of car doors. Dust off with compressed air. For the areas that need to be dusting that you can’t reach, use a can of compressed air. It will work great for vents and small crevices around buttons. Coffee filters also work great to wipe off large and dusty areas like your dashboard and car doors. Do you have any additional car-cleaning tips or ideas? Share them with us in the comments so we can try them out. Thanks for reading our post today.

Books to Read for Black History Month-image

Today on Canyon Park Blog, we’re inviting you to observe Black History Month by reading some of our favorite works of African American authors. Enjoy reading one of the following titles in your Puyallup, WA apartment this month: Beloved by Toni Morrison “Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby. Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe’s new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved. Filled with bitter poetry and suspense as taut as a rope, Beloved is a towering achievement.” Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson “Jade believes she must get out of her poor neighborhood if she's ever going to succeed. Her mother tells her to take advantage of every opportunity that comes her way. And Jade has: every day she rides the bus away from her friends and to the private school where she feels like an outsider, but where she has plenty of opportunities… She's tired of being singled out as someone who needs help, someone people want to fix. Jade wants to speak, to create, to express her joys and sorrows, her pain and her hope. Maybe there are some things she could show other women about understanding the world and finding ways to be real, to make a difference.” Black Enough: Stories of Being Young & Black in America edited by Ibi Zoboi “Black is...sisters navigating their relationship at summer camp in Portland, Oregon, as written by Renée Watson. Black is…three friends walking back from the community pool talking about nothing and everything, in a story by Jason Reynolds. Black is…Nic Stone’s high-class beauty dating a boy her momma would never approve of. Black is…two girls kissing in Justina Ireland’s story set in Maryland. Black is urban and rural, wealthy and poor, mixed race, immigrants, and more—because there are countless ways to be Black enough.” Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates “In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?” Happy Black History Month! We hope these suggestions help you see others in a new light this month.
