The New Year is the perfect new beginning — a time to start over and try to be better. Whether your goals are to travel more, lose weight, or read more, sticking to your goals is sometimes difficult. Stephen Covey says, “The key is taking responsibility and initiative, deciding what your life is about and prioritizing your life around the most important things.” We think this a great inspirational quote when focusing on goals!
Life Hack gives some insight on this topic as well. They give a list of seven things you can do when setting and keeping goals. These include focusing on just one area you want to change, planning ahead, accepting (some) failures, and planning rewards for yourself.
When setting your goals or choosing resolutions, pick an area you would like to see progress or success in. Think back on what you struggled with most the last year. This could be budgeting, cooking more nutritious meals, or spending less time on your phone. Choose something that is easily measured. Once you’ve chosen this thing, identify WHY this is what you’ve picked. Do you want to be more present? Make more memories? Save money? Defining a clear “why” behind your goals will give you the motivation to achieve them.
While working on your goals, find a system for keeping score or keeping track of your progress. This will hold you accountable and you’ll be able to see just where you’re at.
Give yourself small rewards along the way. If you’re budgeting, allow yourself a treat when you’ve saved a certain amount. If you’re losing weight, maybe purchase a new water bottle or workout shoes. Find something that will keep you motivated but not throw you off course!
Of course, be realistic about your resolutions. It might be useful to have a friend or family member help you along your journey! Even if you don’t attain your goal, the most important part is trying to improve and be a little better each day.
